City general elections are held on the first Tuesday after the first Monday in March of odd-numbered years until 2019 (California Elections Code, Section 1000). Rolling Hills City Councilmembers serve four-year terms that are staggered, with an election every two years. Beginning in November 2020, the City’s General Municipal Election moved to November of even years, instead of March of odd years. Because of this change, the terms for the individuals elected to the City Council in March 2017 and March 2019 were shortened by four months and those Councilmembers will serve a three-year eight month term.
Each year, in March or April, the Council selects one of its members to serve as Mayor.
Members of the City Council are volunteers and do not receive compensation for attendance at City Council meetings (no salary, no benefits, no allowances, no retirement).
